![]() Well, I decided to do something a little different with my car. A lot of people have replaced their engines with the ZZ4, some with a TPI unit and even a few LT1 conversions. But I chose the LS1 because of its power and reliability. And the fact that it would look really cool. After searching for several weeks, I came across a used engine from a rear ended 1999 Camaro Z28 for only $3200. Unfortunately it was all the way across the country in South Carolina. This was not going to be cheap to ship to Washington. But with the deal I got, I could not pass it up. Oh, did I mention that it came with a T56 six speed transmission as well? This project is really getting interesting. As I was waiting, I picked up a set of Mid America chambered exhaust, a new radiator and support (mine was rusted out), a set of electric fans out of a 98 Trans Am and some new poly bushings. ![]() Finally the engine and trans are here. Now I can get started. I pulled out the original motor and transmission and began cleaning the engine bay. It has to look good for the new motor.
First to go was the AIR pump and the EGR. Next will be to move the alternator up high on the driver's side so it will clear the control arm. The new T56 transmission is several inches longer than the old Muncie so the crossmember will have to be cut and moved back. Also the engine mounts on the LS1 are about 3 inches farther back than on the old 350. Looks like some more custom fabrication is in order. |
