Originally I wanted to do the whole paintjob myself but the bodywork took most part of my summer holiday so I had to change my plans. I took my car to a "do it yourself" paint shop that is actually a normal roomy paint and bodyshop where they let you rent the space and paintbooth when they are not using it themselves. They can also provide one with all the paint and other material like masking supplies and sandindg paper. I did what I could in the few days I had time and left the rest for the bodyshop guys to do. Considering my lack of experience with painting that was probably a good choice... The shop use mainly Glasurit products so I picked the final color from their charts. Unfortunately the Glasurit charts didn't go back far enough to get the formula for the original pewter silver so I had to choose something else. After some browsing of sample sheets I chose the 1998-99 light pewter metallic. It looked like a cool color and I thought it was close enough to the original. Also it's a Corvette (C5) color!
First the car was washed a few times with wax and grease remover. The masking was next and took a few hours to do. That was all I had time to do the first day.

On day two I shot the car with a Glasurit filler. It will seal all the fiberglass strands that show up on those parts of the body where the original resin is thin. Next day I sanded it down and left it for the shop to work on....
The very last thing I did was removing the doors, hood and headlamp pods. While the surface looked pretty good it still had some waves that needed to be ironed out! The shop continued by filling and sanding them. A lot more work before color coats could finally be layed.

Fast forward about one month and this is how the car looked. The shop did a very good job straightening out the body. There are some specs of dust in the clear but as the price was right I'm not complaining!

Ofcourse it rained when I drove the car home without side windows...
