OPTIONS ON LARRY HARKER'S GRAND SPORT #383:

Z16: GRAND SPORT PACKAGE. Besides the Arctic White striping on vivid Admiral Blue Paint, it is equipped with the LT4 V8, ZF-built 6-speed manual gearbox, extra-wide 17-inch wheels wearing the same massive rubber as the late, ZR-1 and extra wide fender flares to cover them. While inside, the familiar Corvette cockpit gets a set of snappy leather sport seats, with special Grand Sport logos.

LT4: 350 CUBIC INCH, 330 HORSEPOWER ENGINE. Basic architecture remains true to the small-block tradition, but the advancements include a new high-compression cylinder head, a recontoured camshaft, new fuel injectors and a performance crankshaft. Add a host of other changes and you've taken a world-class engine and added "bandwidth." In other words, ample low end torque and even more horsepower at a higher rpm.

U1F: DELCO-BOSE COMPACT DISC.

F45: SELECTIVE REAL TIME DAMPENING, ELECTRONIC. This is a semi-active suspension system that uses sensors and accelerometers at each wheel, feeding information to the Delco ride control system, which readjusts the shock dampening in 10-15 milliseconds. Of the 593 coupes made with black interior, only 206 had this option.

WHAT DID MOTOR TREND HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THE 1996 GRAND SPORT?

"We couldn't help but think as we drove the '96 GS that here's a lot of racing heritage in the car, dating back to the first Morrison-Cook '85 at Nelson Ledges, to the Corvette Challenge cars of '88 - '89 and to Rippie's World Challenge champions. It's no surprise Corvette Engineer John Heinricy is so excited about the Grand Sport. 'It's the best Corvette we've ever built!' John told us. One pass behind the wheel and you can understand his enthusiasm."

"The Grand Sport is a visual and visceral thrill. If you're one of the few to wrap your mitts around one, don't sell it anytime soon. The 1996 Grand Sport closes out a generation of Corvettes that defined what a world class sports car is all about. It has earned its stripes."
