Vettes at Bristol

I drove the world's fastest 1/2 mile track at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, TN.

It was the VetteFest 2000. The second year for Vettes at Bristol. Basically it is a Vette show at the race track with the added thrill of being able to drive your Vette at the same race track that NASCAR Winston Cup comes to twice a year. In fact it was the weekend after the night race so that track was full of "marbles" from the cup cars. The weekend also included Drag Racing at Bristol Dragway and Autocrossing in the infield of the 1/2 mile track. The track is banked all the way around; 18 degrees on the straights and a whopping 38 degrees in the corners. The cars stick like glue to the track, especially mine. You get paced by an actual NASCAR Grand Prix pace car. They don't let you drive very fast, about 85 MPH going into the corners but is feels much faster. The event was set for 5 lap sessions but turnout was low so we were doing 20 lap sessions. I got in eight of them. That is 160 laps, not all consective though. I ran three sessions in a row and the front tires started to melt. The event will be held next year though the date was still under question. It will likely be held Labor Day Weekend again. If you love to drive your Vette, this is the place. I drove over 500 miles for this and will do it again. There was local news coverage and I was interviewed and aired on TV and written about in the local paper. Autocrossing was a lot of fun too. I got in 6 runs but I was the only one doing it. Taking that car and throwing it around was awesome. I had to leave town before drag racing but I drag race regularly so I did not miss that much. If you want to know more, leave me feedback or send me an email. I'd be happy to pass along information. See action photos here!
