The only modification necessary to the head unit is to the mounts.
My Sony came with a "strap" of metal with holes, which I was able to make the mounts from.
Circuit City (where I bought my speakers and HU) also threw in some extra "straps" for me.

The hardest part about making your own mounts for the Corvette is figuring out the angle
you need to bend the straps to get it to match the angle of the mounts on the car.
Since I didn't have a garage, and I was working on this at night, it took multiple trips between my
apartment and car to get the angle just right.

Remove the plastic peg from the stock head unit, and use a piece of strap to mount it
to the back of the new head unit. Use the old head unit as a template to figure out where the
peg should be mounted. In my case, the axis of the peg was about a 1/8" from the bottom surface
of the new unit. I also hot-glue gunned the peg so it wouldn't vibrate off over time.
