C5 on the Dyno

May 27, 2000 - My day on the dyno:

First, I'll tell you about my boneheaded move. As I left the shop after my dyno runs were done, I noticed a cool breeze coming out of the vents. I looked down and noticed that the A/C was on!! I can't be completely certain that it was on during the dyno runs but have to assume that it was.

In total, 6 runs were done. The first two were normal runs done to calculate hp at the wheels as well as torque. Two runs were done to calculate driveline losses, and another one to calculate fluid losses. The last one was a 1/4 mile run. The dyno operate drives the car for all runs, including the 1/4 mile run, so he takes it pretty easy (ie. normal launch from just above idle, and slow shifts). Needless to say, the ET suffers from this, but what should be fairly accurate is the trap speed. The dyno operator said it should be within 1-2 mph of what you'd see at the track. And my 1/4 mile time...13.4@112.3 mph. The ET is a bit slow, but look at the trap speed. If that's accurate, the C5 is hauling pretty good down the 1320!

The runs were all very close. Here are the best numbers: 308.7 hp 317.1 lbs-ft. The fluid loss was 20.3 hp and the driveline loss a whopping 101.2 hp. From these numbers, he calculated my flywheel hp at 389.6 hp. Not too bad for one performance mod on an LS1 rated at 345 hp from the factory!

The driveline loss is only supposed to be about 15% for a six speed C5 (20% for the automatic) but mine works out to about 20% (kind of disappointed by that).

Anyway, here I am getting strapped down for my runs:
