![]() 1965 L78 Slalom car
This 65 Corvette was sold to Walt Lister on 10-5-1965 by Dick Guldstrand at Baher Chevrolet (Dick Raced for Baher Chevrolet, and sold cars when not racing. One month later Dick left Baher to race for Roger Penske. Dick Contacted Walt when the car was returned to Baher Chevrolet by a newlywed couple. After a trip from LA to NY and back, the newlyweds decided to divorce, and returned the car. (Not surprised with 4.11's) Walt's 1st race in this car was 10-17-1965 at Carlsbad raceway, on tires and wheels borrowed from racer Dick Guldstrand. Walt and Dennis McCosh raced Walts car from 65 through 72. Dennis bought the car from Walt in Aug 1969 and raced it every year until 9-27-87. I purchased the car from Dennis on 3-21-98 I have the times / dates & results from 220 races (65-87). Dennis was the times keeper, and has retained all the clubs records. 1965 to 1971 "PSCC" Pacific Sports Car Club 1972 "SCCA" Southern Cal. Corvette association 1973 to 1977 "SMART" Selected Marques Autocross Racing Team. 1978 to 1987 "GRA" Guldstrand Racing Association. Year end overall race results: (5) 1st place finish's 1967 (W.L. 1st in class and tied undefeated for overall champ with Don Burke and Don Devendorf ) 1969 D.M. 1st in class, 1981 D.M. 1st in class, 1982 D.M. 1st in class and teid for overall champ with a perfect score. 1985 D.M.1st in class (2) 2nd place yr end finishes - 1966 WL and 1986 D.M. (5) 3rd place yr end finishes - 1971 D.M, 1974 D.M, 1975 D.M, 1978 D.M, 1984 DM . Member of Guldstrands 5 car team a few yrs. Mech History Today, the car has approx. 80k miles, Many from towing. The car retained its Factory original drive train, paint & interior. Headers, Susp & Side exhaust installed many years ago, ribbed Torque Thrust wheels installed late 1965, Koni shocks 1966. Through the yrs things were rebuilt. Rear-end (2-17-78 at 49094 mi), & trans (7-22-82) . In Nov. 65 the engine was rebuilt by Baher Chevrolet under warranty. Then in Feb. 69 a 427 short block from Paramount Chevrolet, part # 13958671 $344.38 was installed. The original 396 was rebuilt in 1971, and again on 6-29-76 with 65,200 mi. to 402ci. Orig carb was rebuilt at the Holley Custom shop in 2000. Susp. was set up at Dick Guldstrand's, last major upgrade was on 2-20-76. Mods include 6 leaf spring, short stiff coils, sway-bars w/heim joint end links & solid alum blocks, Hvy duty adj.heim joint camber rods , Modified rear trailing arms (inboard), Diff front spacer,Spherical joints, rear locating kit & more. All orig parts removed from car were saved by its 2 orig owner's. Car data / 65 Trivia 9% or (2157) 1965 Corvette's were built with the 425hp "L78" Engine option. (748) coupes and (1409) Conv., 23562 total. This is an early car {for an L78} built on 4-6-65. 5% or (1191) 65's were painted "AA" Tuxedo Black. 5% or (1277) cars were "BA" hard Top Only. 16% or (3809) 65's came with "A31" Power windows. ![]() The paint looks better than it is in these pictures, you can see on the door the cond. of some of the flat surfaces (Lacquer checked).(sides are ok) Have decided to leave the original paint. But do get tired of hearing "when are you going to get it painted?"
